Anna

Anna was a prophet, the daughter of Penuel, and a descendant of the tribe of Asher, in the northern kingdom of Israel. During the early years of Jesus’ life, Anna was an elderly and wise woman who devoted her life to God. At 84 years old, Anna is one of two women whose age was given in Scripture. 

Anna had only been married seven years when her husband died. She spent the rest of her days at the temple worshipping night and day, regularly praising God and fasting. She was a woman of deep devotion to God. 

When Jesus was a baby, his parents brought him to the temple to be consecrated. According to Levitical law, a Jewish mother is to bring her son to the temple to be dedicated 40 days after his birth for her purification to be complete.(Leviticus 12:2-8) 

When Jesus and his parents arrived at the temple, Anna instantly recognized this child.

Her connection with God was so deep that she immediately knew He was the One who would save the world. Anna’s response was to praise God.

She eagerly approached this family, giving thanks and proclaiming to everyone that He was the one who would bring redemption to Jerusalem. (Luke 2:36-38)
